Muang Phone Botanical Garden, Khon Kaen

Background

The Botanical Garden Organization (BGO) recognized the importance of the efficient preservation of natural resources, including educating the public of the botanical knowledge, therefore, 5 botanical garden branches were established according to the BGO’s policy with the mission of becoming the center of plant collection, research and ecotourism in the North-Eastern part of Thailand. The BGO investigated the area of Thung Phung Phut, Amphoe Phon, Khon Kaen and discovered that the area is suitable for the establishment of the regional plant collection center. The North-Eastern Plant Collection Center, which was later named Khon Kaen Botanical Garden, was founded in 2002 and was operated until present.

  • To be the center of native plants collection and local plants collection in the North-Eastern part of Thailand.
  • To be the conservation and breeding center of native and local plants and to return the yield to the nature in order to restore the ecosystem

The KKBG is one of the five botanical garden branches of the Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden (QSBG), Chiang Mai with the mission to collect the samples of native and local plants in the North-East of Thailand. The KKBG is also the experimental and research center on economic crops and salt tolerant plants with the collaboration with researchers from various institutes in the region, in order to become the training center for the students from the educational institutes within the region. Moreover, the KKBG also aims to develop the area and landscape into the botanical learning center, as well as nature recreational area consisting of leisure activities and ecotourism.

The KKBG is located in the area of Thung Phung Phut, in between 2 Tambols; Tambol Hua Thung and Tambol Pek Yai, Amphoe Phon, Khon Kaen. The KKBG is 12 kilometers away from the center of Amphoe Phon to the North-East on the Muang Phon-Tha Nang Naew highway (Number 2233).
